OUR STORY
How Did We Start?
Our fish welfare programme was launched in 2021 as the second programme of the Farm Animal Protection Association.
From the beginning, our work was shaped by field observations and direct engagement with producers. Rather than relying on top-down assumptions, we built our strategy around real practices, needs, and challenges identified on the ground.
This needs-based approach continues to guide our efforts to develop solutions that are both impactful and practical for the sector.
How Are We Progressing?
Future For Fish has implemented some of Türkiye’s first dedicated fish welfare initiatives. We have presented fish welfare research at international conferences, published reports, and organized public launch events.
Through engagement with the private sector, we secured fish welfare commitments from companies such as Metro Markets and Divan Hotels, as well as aquaculture producers including Abalıoğlu.
We also organized Türkiye’s first fish welfare trainings for the students of aquaculture engineering and invited international academicians to Türkiye to contribute to field-based research and implementation efforts.
What’s Next?
In the coming years, Future For Fish will focus on strengthening scientific evidence, developing practical solutions, and supporting their wider adoption across the sector.
This includes supporting targeted research, expanding international academic collaborations, and scaling up pilot projects based on field experience.
We also aim to integrate fish welfare improvements into supply chains and policy processes through systematic engagement with companies, producers, and decision-makers. Our goal is to turn research findings into lasting impact through guidelines, standards, and corporate commitments.
Through these efforts, we seek to reduce the preventable suffering experienced by billions of fish each year.
