Fish Welfare Training for Students

We believe that lasting change in fish welfare depends on future professionals shaping the sector.

For this reason, we recognise the importance of collaborating with aquaculture engineering students to promote long-term progress.

Our programme introduces students to fish welfare from scientific, ethical and practical perspectives, demonstrating its relevance to their future professional lives, research and decision-making.

Using this approach, we launched the first Fish Welfare Education Programme in Türkiye, bringing together aquaculture engineering students from universities across the country and raising awareness of fish welfare within the sector.

We held the programme in Aydın between 27–29 November 2024. Through a rigorous selection process, we selected 25 students from 7 different universities and provided them with scholarships to participate in the training. The programme consisted of theoretical and hands-on sessions covering topics such as the scientific foundations of fish welfare and electrical harvesting systems. During a hatchery visit on the second day, students observed fish welfare practices. Accommodation and transportation throughout the programme were provided with the support of Adnan Menderes University.

During the programme, students met with academics and industry experts to learn about fish welfare and aquaculture production.

The training was led by Academic Advisor Prof. Dr. Deniz Çoban, our Program Manager Deniz Kıraç Uncu, Prof. Dr. Aslı Cadun Yünlü and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Şükrü Yıldırım. Students also met with representatives from Abalıoğlu, Sürsan, Kılıç, Noordzee and AYSUBİR, learning about industry practices and needs.

After the programme, five students received scholarships to attend SUYMERBİR's 10th Aquaculture Workshop, expanding their professional networks.
