FUTURE FOR FISH IN SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH

At Future For Fish, we prioritize scientific research in all our activities because we believe that the future of fish depends on scientific knowledge, evidence-based approaches and academic collaboration.

In line with this, we monitor sector practices. We examine them using scientific methods and produce tangible results.

Two people, one sitting and one kneeling, are working with a bucket of fish on a concrete floor. The person sitting is wearing a camouflage hat, black shorts, and a T-shirt, while the kneeling person has a black cap and is holding a fish. A fish processing machine and another person standing nearby are also visible.

Fish Welfare Report: Electrical Harvest System Review in Turkey

As part of our contribution to scientific research we published “Fish Welfare Report: Electrical Harvest System Review in Turkey” in 2023.

We assessed current fish welfare practices in Türkiye using field data and examined the impacts of electrical harvesting systems on fish welfare in a comprehensive way. The report was one of the first studies to focus on Türkiye, and it added to the existing literature on the subject.

Leading an International Research in Fish Welfare: Muğla Field Study

In September 2025, we led one of Türkiye’s most comprehensive field studies on fish welfare in sea bass and sea bream farming.

The study brought together innovation-oriented producers and academicians across five countries and five universities. Under real production conditions, we evaluated different harvest methods used for European seabass and gilthead seabream, following a scientific methodology.

Through this work, we aimed to:

  • bring scientific research into real farm conditions,

  • generate comparable field data on harvest welfare,

  • contribute to the scientific literature on farmed fish welfare.

Looking Ahead

In the coming period, we will continue to conduct new field studies, expand our academic collaborations, and contribute to the scientific literature by sharing our findings. Our aim is to establish ourselves as a reliable, transparent, science-based point of reference for fish welfare.
